Is CARFAX free? What's free and what a CARFAX report costs

Usually not. A full CARFAX report is free only when a seller, dealer or listing has already paid for it. Otherwise the original report costs $44.99 on carfax.com — or $18.99 here.

Where you can see a CARFAX report for free

No website can pull a free CARFAX report for any VIN you like. These are the free options that really exist:

  • Ask the seller or dealer

Many dealers buy a CARFAX report for the cars they sell and share it at no cost, and some private sellers have one too. Check that the VIN on the report matches the car and that the report is recent.

  • Look for a report link in the listing

Used-car listing sites, CARFAX's own listings among them, often link a report for the advertised car. It covers that car only.

  • Run our free VIN check

It is not a CARFAX report. It shows which reports — CARFAX, AutoCheck and auction records — have records for the VIN and what each costs, so you only buy a report that has something to show.

  • Use the free insurer and recall lookups

NICB VINCheck shows whether participating insurers reported the car as stolen and not recovered, or as a total loss. The NHTSA lookup shows open safety recalls. Neither shows owners, accidents, mileage or service history.

Be careful with sites that promise a free CARFAX for any VIN: they usually deliver a different, much thinner report, or ask for payment once you have entered the VIN.

How much does a CARFAX report cost?

It depends on where you get it. Our price is the one checkout charges today; the carfax.com price is its list price for a single report.

What a CARFAX report shows

A CARFAX report collects what has been reported about one VIN to CARFAX's sources. Typical sections:

  • Title brands such as salvage, rebuilt, flood or lemon
  • Reported accidents and damage
  • Odometer readings over the years
  • The number of owners and how the car was used, for example as a rental
  • Service and maintenance records reported by shops and dealers
  • Registration events and the states where the car was registered

A report only contains what was reported. An accident that never reached its sources will not appear, so a clean report is no proof of a clean history — have the car inspected as well.

CARFAX, AutoCheck, both or VINinfohub ONE?

Each is a one-time purchase for one VIN. Pick by what matters most for the car you are looking at.

CARFAX

$18.99

Service and maintenance records, ownership history, accident and damage reports, title brands and odometer readings.

Best pick when the service history matters most — that is where CARFAX is strongest.

AutoCheck

$16.99

The AutoCheck Score from Experian, which compares this vehicle with similar ones, plus title, odometer and accident records.

Best pick for cars that went through auctions — AutoCheck is strong on auction-sourced records.

CARFAX + AutoCheck bundle

$28.06

Both history reports at the discounted bundle price. Each source can hold records the other doesn't, so together they give the fullest picture of this vehicle's history.

VINinfohub ONE – Complete Vehicle History Report

$21.69

One consolidated report that combines all available history and auction data for this VIN, with duplicates removed — plus the AI car consultant in the online version.

A record is one entry in a source's history for this VIN. The record count is not a number of accidents.

Frequently asked questions

Is CARFAX free?

No. CARFAX sells its reports, and there is no free CARFAX report for any VIN you choose. You can see one for free when a seller, dealer or listing site has already bought it for that car. Otherwise the original report costs $44.99 on carfax.com or $18.99 at VINinfohub.com.

How much is a CARFAX report?

One CARFAX report costs $44.99 on carfax.com, which also sells multi-report packages. At VINinfohub.com the same original report costs $18.99, and in a 10-pack each CARFAX report is $12.34.

How can I see a CARFAX report for free?

Ask the seller or dealer — many dealers share the CARFAX report they bought for the car — and look for a report link in the listing. Make sure the VIN on the report matches the car and the report is recent: a report for another car tells you nothing about this one.

Is a CARFAX report bought here the same as one from carfax.com?

Yes. You get the original CARFAX report for the VIN, with CARFAX's own records and layout — not a summary or a re-typed copy. Only the price differs: $18.99 here instead of $44.99.

Do I need a subscription or a trial?

No. Every report here is a one-time purchase: there is no subscription to cancel and no trial that turns into a charge.

What does the free VIN check show?

It shows which reports — CARFAX, AutoCheck and auction records — have records for the VIN, and the price of each, before you pay. It is not a CARFAX report and does not show the history itself.

Should I buy CARFAX or AutoCheck?

CARFAX is strongest on service and maintenance records; AutoCheck adds the AutoCheck Score and is strong on auction records. For an expensive car, or one that went through auctions, get both: together they cost $28.06 for one VIN.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, when the error is on our side: if a report isn't delivered, is for the wrong VIN or fails for a technical reason, we fix it or refund you in full. A delivered report is not refunded because of what it shows; that is why the free check lists the available records before you pay.
